You’re right – see my old post on this at http://thesimpleblogcompany.com/2010/06/review-new-plugin-for-pinging/ – WP pings for additions AND updates, whereas ideally you just want a “ping” to happen for new content.

Hi Tracey;
I thought WP pinged automatically whenever you publish or update a blog post; so the problem is you could be thought a ping spammer if you update posts too often.
Therefore you need a ‘ping optimizer’ plugin to restrict the number of excessive pings.

Yes agreed, some background knowledge is a good idea, as it would be when hiring a builder, plumber, lawyer or anyone really. I think the main problem here is sorting the genuine SEO providers from the unscrupulous snake oil sellers ).

I think in addition to your points I would also suggest remembering (as with anything), you get what you pay for, always ask for references (and call them), it is usually better to work with a company based in your own country, ask the provider what reporting and how often it is provided and read the contract VERY carefully.

Thanks for your comment Hitesh – one thing, I think people should definitely know what SEO is about (even if they don’t know the minutiae) so that they can assess whether a company is being honest with them or not!

It can take a long time to learn SEO and most business owners need to concentrate on their businesses. Having some background knowledge can be useful but most of the time it hampers our efforts as we need to re-educate clients about what they think they know about SEO.

You are 100% correct about any SEO company that promises a position 1 ranking. It is however common practice for companies to offer page 1 rankings in return for a performance bonus.

Fan pages are great if your fans actually see the posts. Have you already talked about the change in default setting to see posts of pages and friends you interact with most? I changed my settings and noticed a big difference in the friends/pages that I see. Trying to get the word out. Thanks!
