Of course I’ve taken my own advice, and I have the plugin Akismet installed & switched on… but comment spammers have still been targeting me heavily – up to 100 spam comments on some (bad) days!
Now I know that Akismet stops these comments from going anywhere they shouldn’t, but I just don’t like the idea of being attacked like this… yep, I took it a bit personally! Daft, I know, as it’s me vs. the robots but still… I did

(by the way: another benefit of reducing spam is it takes up less space on your hosting account – always a good thing!!)
Update: 5 days later
After having the WP-Captcha plugin AND the time limit (under “Discussion”) both switched off for 5 days, I’m already up to 54 new spam comments. So I’ve now switched the plugin back on and will monitor.
