Is your website fit for 2011?
It’s just the way we function nowadays….mobile phones (or cell phones, depending on where you are!) are so vital to the way the majority of us function in our daily lives that we can’t imagine ever doing without them… yet less than 20 years ago they were new technology.
With so many people browsing the Web these days with their mobile devices (Blackberrys, iPhones or iPads to name but a few), if we could make our WordPress websites work better on those devices as well as on computers & laptops wouldn’t that be a great advantage?
Browsing web sites using a mobile device is becoming more and more common among our technologically advanced society. Why not take a few minutes to make sure your web site looks and performs well in a mobile environment?
Does it sound way too complex & “techie” though?
Well, the good news is that there’s a plugin that will help you out with this… the WPTouch plugin helps you make your site more “mobile friendly”, by automatically detecting when a visitor to your website is using a mobile device. It then displays a customised mobile theme (optimised for small screens) instead of your normal WordPress theme. WPTouch automatically transforms your WordPress blog into an iPhone application-style theme when viewed from various devices, such as iPhones, the iPod Touch, or the BlackBerry Storm.
Here are a couple of photo sequences of my own iPhone, showing you how things will look: (click on each image to see a full-size version of it; the images will open in a new window or tab.)
Picture 1: the converted site, and how you can switch back to “normal” mode
and
Picture 2: the normal site, and how you can switch to “mobile” mode

[IMPORTANT NOTE: if a user switches between the 2 modes they may need to clear their browser cache on their mobile device for the changes to take effect - e.g. on an iPhone, go to settings, Safari, and "empty cache"]

The free version of WPTouch can be installed by go to “Plugins” ==> “Add New” and searching for “wptouch” (all one word), and then installing “WPTouch iPhone Theme“.
If you want to get really fancy, go for the Pro version, which you can read about & buy at the WPTouch website.
