Google Analytics is a very versatile and useful tool to enable tracking of a host of things on your website: traffic volumes, the country of origin, whether they came to your site through search engines or direct links, what search terms visitors used (if they came from search engines) – and a whole lot more.
And… it’s free!
This video is an introduction to setting up a Google Analytics account and creating the code you need to put onto your website, and then using a plugin to add the code on all pages & posts of your website.
Note: this is the address you’ll need to sign up to Google Analytics: http://www.google.com/analytics/

Hi Tracey
Thank you for this video. I signed up for a Google Analytics account last year but did not understand exactly where to place the code, now I know and have finally added GA to my blog.
One question though. Should I change my privacy policy now as I cannot find any mention of Google Analytics in it? I added the policy more than a year ago.
I find so many great tips on your blog, thank you for sharing these small but sometimes difficult to find ways to improve my blog.
Hi Elsie,
well done on taking action!! With regards to your Privacy Policy – you don’t need to mention GA specifically – if you read their Terms Of Services, section 7 or 8 explains what you need to include in the Policy – basically you need to mention that you use cookies to collect non-personal info about site visitors. The wording in the GA site is helpful.
good luck!
